Dots Memories vs Pix Wedding

Dots describes itself first as a place to save your story in photos and videos, family, partner, children, friends, pets, trips, and then offers Events as a second kind of space inside the same app. That is the whole shape of the product. A wedding album is a mode you switch into, not the reason the app exists.

That design choice buys you something real. The app does not go dead after the wedding, and the memories you keep in it accumulate into a Dotbook later. It also costs you something real. Every decision inside the product has to serve both a private family timeline and a 200-person reception, and those two jobs pull in opposite directions. A private timeline wants accounts, permanence and a phone-native interface. A reception wants zero friction, zero accounts and a big printed QR code that a stranger can use in nine seconds.

Pix Wedding only has the second job. That is why the free tier exists, why there is no guest cap, why nobody installs anything, and also why it has no answer at all for what you do with your holiday photos in March.

Dots publishes three one-time event plans on its plans page, checked September 2026: Intimate at 24.90 EUR for up to 50 guests, Classic at 49.90 EUR for up to 175, and Luxe at 139.99 EUR for up to 350. The page is explicit that these are one-time fees with no monthly payments or automatic renewals, which is genuinely couple-friendly and the same philosophy Pix Wedding uses.

The trap is the shape of the ladder. The jump from Classic to Luxe is roughly 90 EUR for a guest cap increase, and weddings are the single worst category of purchase for guessing a headcount six months out. A couple who buys Classic in February for an expected 160 guests and ends up at 190 in September is choosing between an upgrade and a cap.

Pix Wedding prices by feature depth, not by headcount: $49 Starter, $59 Standard, $89 Pro, one-time, with unlimited guests on all three. At 40 guests Dots Intimate is cheaper in raw money. At 190 guests the comparison flips hard. Work out which side of that line your wedding sits on before you compare sticker prices.

Dots is listed as a free download with in-app purchases on both the App Store and Google Play. That is accurate and it is how most people first hear about it. But the free part is the personal memories app. As of September 2026 the public plans page lists no free event album tier, which means the first time you see your own wedding album working is after you have paid for it.

Pix Wedding runs the opposite experiment on purpose. The free tier gives you a live album, a working QR code and 20 real guest uploads with no credit card. That is enough to print a test sticker, put it on a table at your rehearsal dinner, and find out whether your family scans it. If they do not, you have learned something important for nothing. If they do, the upgrade removes the cap.

Neither model is dishonest. But "free app" and "free wedding album" are different claims, and it is worth knowing which one you are reading.

Both platforms get this mostly right for guests. Dots states plainly that guests do not need to download anything or register, they scan or tap the link. Pix Wedding works the same way. So the headline "no app download" row is close to a tie, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling you something.

Two details separate them. First, the Dots plan table marks web guest access on the Intimate tier as registration required, while Classic and Luxe are listed as no registration. If you buy the entry plan to save money, the people at table nine are the ones who pay for it. Second, the host side is app-first: you create and run the album inside the Dots iOS or Android app, while Pix Wedding hosts work in a browser on whatever device is already open.

That second one sounds minor until the morning of the wedding, when the person managing the album is also getting their hair done and their phone is at 12 percent.

The Dots wedding page describes 12 months of private and secure cloud storage for event albums, with double backup on Classic and Luxe and the Intimate plan noted as renewable, checked September 2026. That is a clear, published number, which is more than several competitors in this category offer.

Pix Wedding publishes 6 months on Starter, 1 year on Standard and 2 years on Pro. On the raw hosting window, Dots at 12 months beats Pix Starter and matches Pix Standard. Credit where it is due.

The difference is custody. Every paid Pix plan includes a full-quality ZIP download of every original file, so at the end of the hosting window you are not asking anyone for permission. On Dots, bulk download sits on Classic and Luxe only. On Intimate you have a 12-month window and no listed one-click way to take everything with you at the end of it. Ask yourself where the files live in 2031, not just in 2027.

This is the part of Dots worth taking seriously. The Dots store lists a physical Dotbook pack at 69 EUR, down from a regular 99 EUR, checked September 2026: a 20x25 cm hardcover or linen book, 60 pages included and expandable, automatically laid out and then reviewed by you, shipping to Europe included, bundled with a year of premium app access that covers 4K photos and HD video up to 5 minutes.

The clever bit is the QR codes printed inside the pages. Scan a page and a guest video plays, or your grandmother's voice message plays. A printed book that carries sound is a genuinely good product idea and it is the strongest reason on this page to choose Dots.

The honest arithmetic, though: a Dotbook is a separate purchase on top of the event plan. Classic plus a Dotbook is roughly 119 EUR at the discounted book price, and shipping is described as included for Europe, so couples outside Europe should confirm delivery before assuming the number holds. Pix Wedding does not print books at all. It gives you the original files and you take them to whichever printer you like, which is more work and more control.

Dots caps guest video at 2 minutes on Intimate and Classic, and 5 minutes on Luxe. Photos and videos are otherwise unlimited within the guest cap.

Two minutes is fine for a dance floor clip and a nephew doing something regrettable with a napkin. It is not fine for a best man speech, a father-of-the-bride toast, or the ceremony vows, which is exactly the footage couples say afterwards they wish someone had captured from the back of the room.

Pix Wedding does not publish a video length cap on paid plans, and guest video uploads at full resolution. If long-form guest video matters to you, check the plan you are buying rather than the plan on the marketing page.

Moderation is close to even. Dots advertises that only the host or administrators can see uploads even when other users contribute, which is a solid privacy default. Pix Wedding also gives the host control of the album and what is visible.

On live display the two products diverge. Pix Wedding includes a live slideshow from the Standard plan up, so the album can run on a screen at the venue and refresh as photos land. Dots' public wedding and plans pages do not describe a live reception slideshow as of September 2026, so if a screen at the party is part of your plan, confirm it with Dots directly rather than assuming.

Dots does offer something Pix does not here: a set of about 50 template designs for invitations, signage, games and posters, mentioned on its wedding page. If you want your QR signage and your table games to come from the same place, that is a convenience worth counting.
