The local factors that push a San Francisco wedding above or below the $34,200 average.

City venues tend to charge more per hour and per guest, and parking, valet and sales tax land on top.

Taxes and service charges
Landmark in-city venues like the Presidio Officers' Club and Fort Mason Center book up early for Saturday dates. Couples who look north to Marin or east across the Bay often find more open dates and a wider spread of venue prices, and any wedding in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, including Baker Beach, needs a National Park Service permit.

Book the big vendors 12 to 18 months out
Six months is too late for the venue in most markets. Here is the order the planning guides give, and what venues and photographers say about their own calendars. In San Francisco, summer and fall are the busiest, so those Saturdays go first.

Order from The Knot's when-to-book guide.
What the guides say vs what vendors see
- The Knot vendor timeline Venue, planner, caterer and photographer 12 to 18 months before the wedding. It also notes couples have been booking earlier since the pandemic.
- Zola planning timeline Its month-by-month checklist puts the venue at 11 months and the photographer at 10, while the FAQ on the same page says 12 to 18 months for the venue. Treat 11 months as the late end.
- A wedding venue Mayfair Farms tells couples to book 12 to 18 months ahead for the date they want.
- A photography studio Candid Studios says popular Saturdays get booked 12 to 18 months out.
That is roughly the window most couples plan in, per The Knot, which is why venues and photographers fill a year or more ahead.
The marriage license is the only legal deadline, and in most states it comes days or weeks before the wedding, not months. The venue calendar is the real clock. Check the California rules in our marriage license guide.
Peak months and cheaper quarters
Peak months in San Francisco: summer and fall. National spend by quarter from The Knot shows how much the calendar matters.

San Francisco wedding calendar
Quieter months give you more open dates and more room to ask for a lower rate or a smaller minimum.
US average spend by quarter
July to September weddings average $35,400, the January to March and October to December quarters $33,200 (The Knot 2026).

The Knot suggests holding back 5% of the budget as a just-in-case fund. On a $51,000 San Francisco wedding, that is the figure above.
1Consider venues in the Central Valley or Inland Empire instead of coastal areas to cut the venue rental line.
2Northern California wine country offers stunning vineyard venues at lower price points than Napa Valley if you explore Paso Robles or Lodi.
3Schedule a weekday or winter wedding in Southern California, where mild weather still allows outdoor celebrations year-round.
4Use California's incredible local flower farms for seasonal blooms at wholesale prices instead of importing exotic florals.
5Skip the traditional sit-down dinner in favor of a food truck reception, which is popular and budget-friendly across California.

Skip the photo booth rental and let guests share their own photos with a QR code instead. See how to collect guest photos.
The bill after the quote
San Francisco quotes often look manageable until percentage fees, permits, and venue rules get layered on top. These are the add-ons that most often push a budget past the $51,000 average.

Zola figures from Zola, What Weddings Really Cost (updated March 6, 2026), which also says tax and hidden costs typically add 9 to 15% to a budget. Buffer advice from The Knot.

San Francisco sales tax on catering
The California Department of Tax and Fee Administration lists San Francisco's combined rate at 8.625% for 2026. On the $11,300 average catering line that is roughly $975, added alongside any service charge or administrative fee, so ask your caterer exactly which lines are taxed.

Administrative and preservation fees
The Presidio Officers' Club adds a 22% administrative fee and applicable taxes to its per-guest packages, and Fort Mason Center charges a 10% historical preservation fee on all venue rentals. Neither shows up in a headline per-guest or rental number, so build them into your venue comparison from the start.

Outdoor permits on Presidio and national park land
The Golden Gate National Recreation Area requires a permit for a wedding of any size, with a $60 non-refundable application fee, and the park lists staffing costs at $100 per hour per staff member. In the Presidio, all outdoor weddings need a Special Use Permit, and the Western Lawn at Presidio Tunnel Tops lists $3,500 for Saturday or Sunday and $2,000 Monday through Friday.

Indoor space or a four-walled tent for late dancing
Presidio permit rules allow amplified music outdoors only from 8am to 8pm, capped at 60 dB at 50 feet, but allow it until 10pm indoors or inside a four-walled tent. Couples who want dancing after dinner at an outdoor Presidio site need to budget for an enclosed tent or move the reception inside.

Cake-cutting and outside-vendor fees at hotels
The Fairmont San Francisco provides food and beverage in-house, allows a licensed outside caterer only under some circumstances, and charges a $6 per person cutting fee for outside cakes. Ask any hotel venue for its full list of outside-vendor fees before you commit to a favorite bakery.

Solid product no complaints really. A couple older relatives needed the QR explained but once they got it they became the most active uploaders which is lowkey hilarious. Support answered my question same day too
Vegas Valentines Day wedding, 180 guests, absolute party. Album goes from chapel photos to club photos and the transition is hilarious. My brother uploaded a video of our entrance at the club and its the most played video in the album by far 🎰
Good product, does what it says. A few of the older guests needed a hand with the QR code but once my cousin showed them they were away. Support got back to me same day when I had a question about the download. Would've liked a bit more flexibility on the album layout but that's me being picky
