Every draft follows this order, whatever the role or tone. Timings below are for a three minute speech. Shorter speeches keep all five parts and trim the story.

How long should a wedding speech be?

Three minutes is the sweet spot for most best man and maid of honor speeches, and five is the ceiling. The word counts below use 130 words a minute, a relaxed pace inside the 100 to 150 words a minute that VirtualSpeech gives for comfortable presentations. Nerves and laughter slow you down, so a draft that reads fast at home is about right on the night.

06Before you stand up

What to keep in, what to leave out

The generator keeps the structure clean. These are the calls only you can make.

Do

  • Pick one story and tell it with a real detail (a place, a time, a line someone said).
  • Say who you are in the first ten seconds.
  • Talk to the partner at least once, by name.
  • Read it out loud with a timer and cut anything that runs past your slot.
  • End by raising your glass and naming the couple, so the room knows when to drink.

Don't

  • Mention exes, past breakups or how many people they dated before.
  • Tell a story that only works if you were there without a line that lets the room in.
  • Roast the partner. Joke about the person you know, welcome the one you don't.
  • Drink heavily before your turn, or wing it without notes.
  • Read it off your phone with the screen dimming halfway through. Print it or use cards.

When a speech generator helps

  • You know what you want to say but freeze on the first line.
  • You have good stories and no idea what order to put them in.
  • You need a speech that fits a strict 2 or 3 minute slot.
  • You are the third speaker and need a short toast that doesn't repeat anyone.

When to write it from scratch

  • You already have a draft that sounds like you. Keep it, use the structure section to tighten it.
  • The speech is about a loss or a hard year. Those words should come from you, slowly.
  • You speak in a second language at the wedding. Write it in that language first.

Okay so i'll try to keep this short but i probably wont. We planned this thing for almost two years and i was the person with a spreadsheet for every single vendor, and photos were the one part i had no plan for. Why the drafts use your details, not invented ones

A speech falls flat when it could be about anyone. The generator only uses the names, stories, traits and inside joke you give it. It does not make up memories to fill a gap, and where a detail such as a name is missing, the draft leaves a [bracketed] placeholder for you to fill in. That keeps every draft honest, and it means the more specific your input, the better the speech.

The "leave out" field works the other way: type a word like an ex's name or a city, and any story, trait or joke that mentions it is dropped before the drafts are written.
