Under Maryland Family Law §2-405, a license takes effect at 6 a.m. on the second calendar day after it is issued. The Talbot County clerk gives the example that a license issued October 18 takes effect at 6 a.m. on October 20. For a Saturday ceremony, that means picking up the license no later than Thursday. A circuit court judge in the county where you applied can authorize an earlier effective time for good cause, but only if one party is a Maryland resident or a member of the armed services, so out-of-state couples should not count on it.

Fees also vary by county: Talbot County lists $35 and Frederick County lists $75. Frederick County charges $25, by appointment, with room for 4 to 6 guests, and Talbot County also charges $25 and holds ceremonies on the courthouse grounds. The license rules still apply, so a courthouse wedding cannot take place before 6 a.m. on the second calendar day after the license is issued. Call the clerk in your ceremony county to book, since each court sets its own schedule.
St. Michaels is a small waterfront town on the Eastern Shore, and the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum sets receptions on an 18-acre campus with more than 2,000 feet of waterfront on the Miles River. Its reception spaces include Navy Point, with the water-facing decks of the At Play on the Bay exhibition building, the Small Boat Shed among the museum's fleet of skiffs, and Fogg's Landing overlooking the marina and Fogg's Cove. St. Michaels is in Talbot County, and a Talbot County license only works in Talbot County, so apply with that clerk.
