04The night, moment by moment

Where the entertainment fits into your day

Most Adelaide couples book one main act for the dance floor and add smaller pieces around it. Here is where each one lands on the day and what it costs.

Ceremony

Live music for the walk down the aisle

A soloist or duo for the ceremony usually costs A$300 to A$700. At an outdoor Adelaide ceremony, ask who brings the speaker and the celebrant's mic, because wind and distance swallow vows.

Something to do while you are having photos

Lawn games, a roving magician or an acoustic set keep guests busy during the hour you are away with the photographer. A roving magician runs about A$300 to A$700 an hour.

Leave a gap for golden hour

In Adelaide the sun sets around 8:30 pm on 21 December and 5:13 pm on 21 June. Tell your DJ or MC so the formalities pause while you slip out for sunset photos.

First dance

First dance, then open the floor

Most DJs blend your first dance song into a big floor filler so guests join straight away. A band will play it live, so send them the song early in case they need to learn it.

Last hour

The big finish

Check the venue's finish time before you pay for overtime, and plan the farewell (sparklers, a guard of honour or a last song) for 15 minutes before the music has to stop.

05DJ, band or both

DJ or band for a Adelaide reception?

A DJ gives you any song and no breaks. A band gives you a show. A singer plus DJ, which a lot of acts now sell as one package, gives you live music over dinner and a DJ for the dance floor.

06Before you book

What to ask a Adelaide DJ or band

Get every answer in writing, then compare the quotes line by line. Two Adelaide acts with the same price can differ by an hour of music or a travel fee.

Example note

What does the price include?

Hours of playing time, early set-up, lighting, wireless mics and a planning meeting. Two quotes with the same headline price can differ by a whole hour of music.

Is GST included?

Some Adelaide prices on this page include GST and some add it on top, which is 10% on a A$1,500 package. Ask before you compare.

What happens if you are sick?

Ask whether they have a backup DJ or a dep musician, and what the contract says about cancellation and refunds.

Can we choose the songs?

Most acts send a planning form with must-play and do-not-play lists. Ask how they handle guest requests on the night.

Sparklers and fireworks in South Australia

Not confirmed: we could not find an official sparkler rule, so check with SafeWork SA and your venue. Use a licensed operator for any display.

Noise limits and finish times

Your venue's finish time, liquor licence and any sound limiter set the real rules. Ask the venue for them in writing and send them to your DJ or band before they quote overtime.

07The bit nobody books

Who photographs the dance floor after 10pm?

Most photographer packages end before the dance floor peaks, so the conga line, the dance-off and the sparkler exit end up on guests' phones. Those photos scatter across a dozen camera rolls unless you collect them on the night.

The morning after

A live slideshow on the reception screen

Guest photos appear on the screen or projector while the party is still going. Ask your DJ or venue for an HDMI input.

Photo missions with a leaderboard

Give guests small missions such as the best dance move or the oldest guest on the floor, and watch the leaderboard during the night.

An audio guestbook

Guests leave a short voice message from their phone, a nice extra between sets when the music is quiet.

FAQ

Adelaide wedding entertainment questions

Short answers on Adelaide DJ and band prices, booking and the local rules, from the sources on this page.

Funk Bros charges A$225 an hour, so most four to six hour weddings come to A$900 to A$1,350. The Duo DJs lists A$1,900 including GST for six hours with an MC, and Tennyson Events puts its full-service package at about A$3,300 to A$3,400 including GST (checked October 2026).

For a peak Saturday, earlier than you think. Tennyson Events says Saturdays in October, November and March are often fully booked 15 to 18 months ahead.

It varies. The Duo DJs adds a surcharge for the Barossa and Fleurieu, while Tennyson Events includes travel up to about an hour from Adelaide. Check the travel line on every quote.

Power, first. Tennyson Events warns that paddock venues may need a generator. Ask your DJ how much power the sound and lighting draw and who supplies the generator.

We could not confirm South Australia's sparkler rule on an official page, and summer fire danger is a real factor in the Hills and on rural sites. Ask your venue and check with SafeWork SA before you plan a sparkler exit.

About 8:30 pm on 21 December, against 5:13 pm on 21 June. A December reception has daylight through dinner, which leaves the dance floor for after dark.
